Best method is to put the trunk end to the front, and tie the ends of a strand to attachment points on either side of the car.
Attachment points can be the grab handles inside the car, points on a roof rack or roof rails, or by looping the twine through both opened doors.
¶ Method 1: Roof Rack or grab handles
- Use a 15-foot piece of twine
- Tie an overhand loop in one end of the twine (like tying off a balloon)
- Loop the long end of the twine around your attachment point and run it through the overhand loop
- Take the long end of the twine and loop it around the trunk or the tree top twice
- Center the trunk and snug up the twine on the near side
- Throw the long end of the twine across to the other side
- Loop the long end of the twine through the attachment point on the other side
- Tie an anchor loop in the twine leading from the trunk to the attachment point.
I like a slip knot with the slipped end toward the attachment point or an alpine butterfly loop
- Run the long end of the twine through this loop
- Pull on the long end to tighten (this is a trucker's hitch)
- Tie off the long end with half hitches around the trucker's hitch.
- Cut off excess twine with a knife
- Repeat for the other end of the tree
- Use a 15-foot piece of twine
- Open both doors
- Tie an overhand loop in one end of the twine (like tying off a balloon)
- Put the long end of the twine through this overhand loop to make a slipped loop
- Put this slipped loop around the trunk or tree top
- Open both car doors and put the long end of the twine through the passenger compartment
- On the other side, loop the long end of the twine around the trunk or tree top
- Tie a tautline hitch to the twine coming up from the passenger compartment
- Tighten the tautline hitch
- Cut off excess twine with a knife
- Repeat for the other end of the tree
